A new grantmaking framework is in the works, informed by Detroit youth and community. We’ve been guided by a year-long listening tour, our past investments in education systems change, and we continue to co-design alongside young Detroiters and those closest to them.

President’s Discretionary Fund

Currently open for applications: Our President’s Discretionary Fund is a $1M annual fund is for small, one-time grants that support 501c3 nonprofits and public entities (school, church, or governmental units) that serve Detroit youth but fall outside The Skillman Foundation’s grantmaking priorities. This is a limited, highly competitive fund, allowing us to support Detroit youth in ways beyond our strategy.

Our Grant Partner Requirements 

  • Be a nonprofit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and provide your tax ID (EIN) number or be a government or public agency (city, county, state, public school district) 
  • Be a publicly supported charity as defined in Section 509(a) of the Internal Revenue Code 
  • In policy and practice, offer opportunity and service to all, regardless of age, race, creed, gender, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and ethnicity 

What We Don’t Fund 

  • For-profit institutions 
  • Endowments, building campaigns, or capital costs, including construction, renovation, or equipment 
  • Political campaigns, to support political activities or to lobby for or against pieces of legislation
