Education Policy & Systems Change
A strong education system delivers high-quality learning to every child, regardless of where they live. It works in partnership with parents and is supported by the broader community. It connects students to after-school programs and pathways to college and careers. And it gives every student the support they need to succeed and build a positive future.
But in Michigan, decades of underfunding and inconsistent, patchwork policies have weakened our public schools, hurt academic outcomes, and left schools struggling to meet students’ needs.
Our education policy and systems work focuses on lasting, meaningful change that goes beyond short-term fixes to make real improvements for students in Detroit and beyond.
The Skillman Foundation funds education advocacy organizations that understand how policies are developed, as well as coalitions that bring organizations and stakeholders together around a shared plan. We support groups that advance policy solutions grounded in research and informed by the experiences of students, families, and educators. We help strengthen local and state systems so that effective policies can be implemented successfully.
We fund:
- Nonprofit education advocacy organizations and coalitions working to strengthen Michigan’s K-12 education system
- The production of new knowledge and innovative ideas for education policy
- Education advocacy groups that engage Detroit youth, families, educators, and community members
- Infrastructure that connects community members to education policy decision making, including engaging with policymakers
- Public outreach and information efforts by nonprofit education advocacy organizations
- The capacity of education system leaders to implement policy effectively
- Coordination among education stakeholders to develop, advance, and implement effective education policies
We do not fund political campaigns, political activities, or lobbying.
