The school year is just beginning… and it is a big year for education policy. While education advocates continue to beat the drum on pressing issues, local, state, and national elections are underway that can shift the tides of decision making.
What are the top issues for students, parents, and those working in and for Detroit education? Watch the recording of a moderated conversation with 2024 Skillman Visionary Awardees Dr. Sirrita Darby, Jenell Mansfield, and Juanita Zuniga who are recognized for their deep collaboration with youth, educators, and organizers. Dr. Sirrita Darby is a mother, former teacher, and co-founder and executive director of the youth-led nonprofit Detroit Heals Detroit, providing afterschool opportunities and resources for Detroit youth. Jenell Mansfield is a mother of twins, former teacher, and political and legislative coordinator at the American Federation of Teachers – Michigan Union, organizing teachers and school staff to advocate for education policy change. Juanita Zuniga is lead organizer of 482Forward’s Youth Organizing Collective where she partners with youth to design and lead campaigns advocating for the changes they want to see in their schools.
These visionary leaders discussed ways to innovate and let youth lead in policy, the role policy plays in how our education system functions, how do people exercise their voice to reach school system leaders and policymakers, and more. Watch the recording to get the scoop from these visionaries on what’s top of mind for young people and education advocates.
