Our Youth Council
The insights of Detroit youth guide our priorities and strategies. While we solicit youth input in many ways, our Youth Council is a formal structure to do so. Our Youth Council meets regularly with Foundation leadership to discuss issues that are important to them and advise how the Foundation and its partners can better support their needs and aspirations.

Details
The Council meets with Foundation leadership bi-monthly, in addition to other engagements and discussions. Terms last for two years. Council members are compensated for their time and are reimbursed for any transportation expenses incurred during their service to the Foundation.
Youth Council Grants
One of largest charges of the Youth Council is distributing their own grants. To date, the President’s Youth Council has given out $310,000 in grants. Through a thoughtful and intentional process our first cohort created two rounds of grants to organizations across Detroit who are youth led or serve youth: $105,000 in 2021 and nearly double that amount, $205,000, in 2022.
Youth Council grants are researched, proposed, and decided upon by youth council members. We do not do this to teach them how to make grants. We do this to learn from them.
