Alexa Borromeo
Alexa Borromeo (she/her) is a Filipina-American multimedia artist, community organizer, and adult ally who joined The Skillman Foundation in 2022 as social change storyteller focused on multimedia storytelling and highlighting the voices of youth and community in Detroit.
Prior to joining The Skillman Foundation, Alexa led Focus: HOPE’s Generation of Promise Program, a celebrated social justice and youth leadership program that serves high school students across 15 different Metro Detroit high schools. She also co-designed and facilitated race equity trainings for corporate and nonprofit organizations across Southeast Michigan.
In addition, Alexa worked at Ford Motor Company as Community Engagement and Creative Lead and led community-centered mobility innovation projects in partnership with city governments in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Pittsburgh, Miami, Austin, and Mexico City.
Alexa has a strong background in supporting afterschool programming. She has taught K-12 afterschool arts programs in schools across the city, coached volleyball through Detroit PAL, and taught intergenerational photography classes bringing together middle schoolers, high schoolers, and older adults to share their stories through photos.
Alexa hails from Houston, TX, to which she attributes much of her passion for working in and with multicultural communities. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor with a BFA in Art and Design and a Minor in Community Action and Social Change. During her time at the University of Michigan, Alexa focused her art practice and studies on decolonization theory and social documentary work.
Throughout her career, Alexa has earned accomplishments such as being a Detroit Equity Action Lab (DEAL) Fellow, Documenting Detroit Photography Fellow, Challenge Detroit Fellow, Entrepinayship Scholar, and she is a recipient of the Detroit City Council Award of Recognition for her dedication to community service.
