Safety – Our Approach

The Skillman Foundation has worked alongside residents, grassroots safety organizations, the Detroit Police Department, Detroit school leaders, and corporate partners to improve community safety, reduce crime and blight, and establish safe routes to school. Our current work in Safety is focused on reducing the number of Detroit youth whose prospects are limited due to punitive disciplinary practices within school and via the criminal justice system. We do this by supporting:

Violence Interventions

  • Implementing evidence-based youth violence intervention programs
  • Helping schools develop welcoming and supportive cultures
  • Strengthening community standards against youth violence

Juvenile Diversion

  • Reducing the number of youth who fall into the criminal justice system
  • Improving relationships between families, community and police
  • Promoting Restorative Practices

Safety is one of three approaches we’re taking to build a more equitable Detroit. Read about our other two approaches: Community & Youth Leadership and Youth Development.

The Skillman Foundation

The Skillman Foundation is a grantmaking organization established in 1960 by Rose Skillman. We have granted out more than $730 million and have served as a vocal advocate to strengthen K-12 education, afterschool programming, child-centered neighborhoods, youth and community leadership, and racial equity and justice.

We are in the process of developing a new strategic framework, co-designed with Detroit youth and their champions.
