Financial Empowerment – Our Approach

Detroit has become a popular spot for new businesses to call home. We want to ensure the city’s youth can share in the prospect of ownership.

Knowing how to manage personal finances is critical to building a secure future for oneself and one’s family. In order for Detroit youth to have true economic opportunity, they must be equipped with the financial knowledge and confidence needed to be responsible and self-sufficient adults. In addition to supporting programs that teach financial literacy to youth and their families, we support youth entrepreneurship activities.

Financial Empowerment is one of three approaches we’re taking to expand prosperity for Detroit youth. Read about our other two approaches: College & Career Pathways and Youth Employment.

The Skillman Foundation

The Skillman Foundation is a grantmaking organization established in 1960 by Rose Skillman. We have granted out more than $730 million and have served as a vocal advocate to strengthen K-12 education, afterschool programming, child-centered neighborhoods, youth and community leadership, and racial equity and justice.

We are in the process of developing a new strategic framework, co-designed with Detroit youth and their champions.
