The Skillman Foundation announces President’s Youth Council to guide strategy

Detroit – To continue amplifying youth voice and perspectives, The Skillman Foundation is seeking nominations for its new President’s Youth Council (PYC).

PYC members will advise Foundation leadership by sharing their experiences, perspectives, and ideas about the Foundation’s role as a changemaker in Detroit.

“As a fierce champion of Detroit children, The Skillman Foundation is dedicated to bringing youth voice and perspectives into our work,” said Tonya Allen, Foundation president & CEO. “Detroit youth are brilliant and resourceful. We are privileged to work on their behalf and by their side to ensure they have the educational and economic opportunities they deserve.”

To further amplify youth voice, the Foundation is welcoming three new members to its Board of Trustees, one of whom is a young Detroiter. An announcement will be made by the end of September.

Council members will have the opportunity to share ideas and issues relevant to them and their peers and provide input on the Foundation’s current and future strategies. They will also gather feedback and insights from other Detroit youth.

The Council will meet with Foundation leadership two-to-three times per calendar year, in addition to other engagements and discussions. Terms will start in November 2020 and last for two years. Council members will receive $250 for each meeting they attend as well as $1,000 at the end of their terms of service. They will also be reimbursed for any transportation expenses incurred during their service to the Foundation.

Nominees must be between 12 and 20 years of age, reside in Detroit, and be able to meet with Foundation leadership at least two to three times per calendar year. Applicants of all identities and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

The deadline for nominations was September 25, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.

Questions about the Council and the nomination process can be directed to Jessica Eiland Anders, special projects manager, at 313-393-1169 or jeiland@skillman.org.

The Skillman Foundation

The Skillman Foundation is a grantmaking organization established in 1960 by Rose Skillman. We have granted out more than $730 million and have served as a vocal advocate to strengthen K-12 education, afterschool programming, child-centered neighborhoods, youth and community leadership, and racial equity and justice.

We are in the process of developing a new strategic framework, co-designed with Detroit youth and their champions.
