Our Kids Essay Contest

A local essay contest will give youth the opportunity to share their ideas and perspectives around their schools and the issues that impact their lives.

The Our Kids Essay Contest is accepting entries from high school and first-year college students until Saturday, November 16. Students are encouraged to submit their work, and adults working with youth are encouraged to share this opportunity with young people to have their voices heard.

Students may choose from the following prompts:

  • What does a student-center school look like to you and what steps can Detroit schools take to build student-centered schools?
  • We believe the way you spend money reflects your values. Based on how your school spends money, what do you think they value most? Tell us what you would want your school to prioritize spending money on and what you think they need to stop spending money on?
  • How is student organizing and activism going to change Detroit schools in the next 10 years?

Essays will be judged by Detroit students and parents working with 482Forward. First prize is $500, second prize is $300, and third prize is $100. All entries are eligible for additional acknowledgments and opportunities.

Submissions can be sent to molly@482Forward.org. Entries must be received by November 16, 2019.

The contest is presented by Media Policy Center, in partnership with 482Forward and with funding from The Skillman Foundation.

The Skillman Foundation

The Skillman Foundation is a grantmaking organization established in 1960 by Rose Skillman. We have granted out more than $730 million and have served as a vocal advocate to strengthen K-12 education, afterschool programming, child-centered neighborhoods, youth and community leadership, and racial equity and justice.

We are in the process of developing a new strategic framework, co-designed with Detroit youth and their champions.
