The Skillman Foundation

Terry Whitfield has joined the Skillman Foundation as a program officer, supporting the Foundation’s education work. Whitfield brings more than a decade of experience in youth development (out-of-school programs for youth) and parent engagement, focusing on diverse populations and communities. Most recently, Whitfield served as a project coordinator for Southwest Counseling Solutions’ Partnership for Youth. In this position, Whitfield helped to strengthen and expand high-quality afterschool programs in Detroit’s Chadsey Condon and Southwest neighborhoods.

“Terry’s enthusiasm for youth and his experience in helping parents, community groups and youth-serving organizations champion children’s academic success makes him a real asset to the Foundation as well as to our city’s children,” said John Ziraldo, vice president of program and policy for the Skillman Foundation.

Whitfield is also a member of the Coalition for the Future of Detroit School Children, serving on its attendance and chronic absenteeism leadership team. He is a board member of the Michigan Afterschool Association, a statewide organization dedicated to building a field of professionals that develop and promote quality out-of-school-time programs for youth, and is a member of 100 Black Men of Greater Detroit, a group working to improve the quality of life in the African American community.

Whitfield has a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Western Michigan University and a master’s degree in youth development from Michigan State University.
