ESD releases latest Scorecard for Detroit’s K-12 schools

This week, Detroit parents have an updated resource to dive into — the latest Excellent Schools Detroit Scorecard.

The Scorecard — available at http://scorecard.excellentschoolsdetroit.org — ranks more than 200 elementary, middle and high schools across all Detroit neighborhoods and all types of schools. Private schools, public schools, public charter schools, and the Educational Achievement Authority schools are all graded on the same rigorous scale.

Excellent Schools Detroit develops its grading system with the belief that an excellent school in Detroit should be one that would be considered excellent anywhere else. It takes multiple data sets into account, including proficiency and growth measures (how far children within a school advance in a school year), college readiness (via the ACT scores), and survey data from students and teachers.

This year’s results contain some bright spots, as well as new proof that there is still a long way to go in Detroit before every child is served by an excellent school.

Of the 224 schools ranked, only 22 received a C+ grade or higher.

Parents can search the Scorecard for their zip code as well as for factors that might help them determine what school is best for their child — features like special services, sports, transportation and before/after care.
