We Believe in Free Speech

Our speech is ours. Freedom of speech, of thought, of giving, these are unalienable, God-given rights. The government doesn’t grant us these rights—but it can suppress them, if we allow it.

That’s not what we do here, in Michigan, in the United States. That is not who we are. America represents and protects these freedoms for every citizen. This is the definition of what it means to be American.

If our government wants to dictate what private citizens and private organizations think and say, if our government gets to call anything they disagree with “domestic terrorism,” then the fundamental rights of all Americans are at risk.

We are not a state or nation of small-minded people. Here in Michigan, we know big ideas can put the world on wheels.

The Skillman Foundation

The Skillman Foundation is a grantmaking organization established in 1960 by Rose Skillman. We have granted out more than $730 million and have served as a vocal advocate to strengthen K-12 education, afterschool programming, child-centered neighborhoods, youth and community leadership, and racial equity and justice.

We are in the process of developing a new strategic framework, co-designed with Detroit youth and their champions.
