The Readers & The Changemakers
School libraries are often seen as the heart of school communities. They are where students gather with one another and explore their interests on any subject. Students have inherent genius and curiosity, and when we allow them to have unbridled access and choice when it comes to literature, they shine.
Although school libraries had virtually disappeared across the city of Detroit, they are now making a comeback, much to the delight of students and teachers. The rebirth of school libraries will have a big impact on students and school systems.

School libraries are being reborn throughout the city and will have a big impact on students and school systems.
About The Storyteller

Josie Silver
I am a teacher librarian in Detroit Public Schools Community District. I have been rooted in literacy access work in the city for the past 8 years and am co-founder of the Detroit School Library Collaborative which is working to support grassroots school libraries. I believe that through showing book joy and student testimonials, people will begin to shift their perspective on the importance of restoring these spaces within the city.
