Detroit students deserve officials who fight for them
This piece is a love letter to Detroit students, who I believe deserve the world. From the genius I’ve seen displayed at any given DPSCD Evening of Fine arts events, to the brilliance I was honored to experience watching Detroit middle & high school students debate on topics I hadn’t thought about until college–I believe it’s my DUTY to fight for their right to actualize their potential in & outside of the classroom. Because I remember being a student hearing blame be passed from state, to local, to school board leaders–but never accountability about what each office CAN do to support Detroit’s youth. And I believe it is ALL of our duty to find our role in this fight–our future depends on it.
In this oped, I use my platform to highlight roles I believe the mayor can, and should, play in prioritizing our young people. But watch out, because next it could be YOU I’m calling out :). We all have this duty…what can you do to step into your power today?
