Immigration Rights: Leaders in Motion

The Skillman Foundation held an intimate conversation with our grant partners, featuring three community leaders who are at the forefront of supporting immigration rights for children and families:

  • Angie Reyes, Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation (@amodhdc)
  • Cindy Gamboa, Mi Poder (@wearemipoder)
  • Alycia Meriwether, Detroit Public Schools Community District (@detroitk12)

Each speaker shared accounts of how the federal administration’s recent orders and actions around mass deportation are impacting the families they serve and explained how their organizations have taken action to support children and their parents. They also shared the following ways any community member can help:

Share information about immigration rights with those who might need it

Deepen your understanding and share with your network information that counters harmful, dehumanizing narratives

The Skillman Foundation

The Skillman Foundation is a grantmaking organization established in 1960 by Rose Skillman. We have granted out more than $730 million and have served as a vocal advocate to strengthen K-12 education, afterschool programming, child-centered neighborhoods, youth and community leadership, and racial equity and justice.

We are in the process of developing a new strategic framework, co-designed with Detroit youth and their champions.
