Kids Matter Here: An Analytic Review of the 10-year Good Neighborhoods Initiative

In 2006, the Skillman Foundation set out to change conditions for Detroit kids by creating the 10-year, $120-million Good Neighborhoods Initiative. To best understand the outcomes of the long-term neighborhood-based work, we worked with a variety of evaluators, residents, stakeholders, grant partners, staff and trustees to form a series of analyses and dialogues. Together, these products make up KIDS MATTER HERE: An Analytic Review of the 10-year Good Neighborhoods Initiative.

We hope to synthesize what the decade of work has accomplished, inform our decisions going forward, and build and share knowledge locally and nationally.

The Skillman Foundation

The Skillman Foundation is a grantmaking organization established in 1960 by Rose Skillman. We have granted out more than $730 million and have served as a vocal advocate to strengthen K-12 education, afterschool programming, child-centered neighborhoods, youth and community leadership, and racial equity and justice.

We are in the process of developing a new strategic framework, co-designed with Detroit youth and their champions.

Hi Otis, the Good Neighborhoods Initiative is no longer active; however, we do still partner with many of the local organizations that were a part of it.
