Marie Colombo Named Senior Director, Office of the President

Marie Colombo has been named senior director, Office of the President. Colombo previously held the position of director of evaluation and learning, and has overseen evaluation, learning and performance monitoring activities since joining the Foundation in 2005. In her new role, Colombo focuses on strengthening internal, integrative organizational activities to ensure strong performance and impact as the Foundation implements its Opportunity Agenda for Detroit Children. She designs and oversees workflow across the organization; supports integrated learning, impact and communications; and facilitates decision making among senior management. Colombo’s depth of knowledge, experience, skill and enthusiasm are a great inspiration to the team as the Foundation continues its work to expand opportunity for Detroit youth.

Colombo’s appointment comes after the retirement of Bill Hanson, who served as chief of staff. Hanson’s contributions to the Foundation over his 13-year tenure were significant, including:

  • Implementing a strategic communications function at the Foundation
  • Developing award-winning annual reports that articulated and advanced the Foundation’s work
  • Supporting the Foundation’s efforts in the Coalition for the Future of Detroit Schoolchildren

The Foundation is grateful for Hanson’s many years of service.

The Skillman Foundation

The Skillman Foundation is a grantmaking organization established in 1960 by Rose Skillman. We have granted out more than $730 million and have served as a vocal advocate to strengthen K-12 education, afterschool programming, child-centered neighborhoods, youth and community leadership, and racial equity and justice.

We are in the process of developing a new strategic framework, co-designed with Detroit youth and their champions.
