How to Apply for a Grant

Step 1: Eligibility

The first step in applying for a grant is to determine whether your organization fits The Skillman Foundation’s requirements for grantees. To be eligible for a grant, you must be a nonprofit organization with federal tax-exempt status (501C3) that implements programs for children, youth and families in the Foundation’s three program areas: Good Schools, Good Neighborhoods and Good Opportunities. Grantees must have at least $100,000 in revenues and must be able to provide a current independent audit as part of the application process.

Step 2: Review The Skillman Foundation’s Guidelines

To determine how best your program might fit with The Skillman Foundation, we invite you to read the section What We Fund where we describe our program areas of interest, priorities and types of grants that The Foundation awards.

Step 3: Submit a Letter of Intent (LOI)

Send us a Letter of Intent (LOI). The Foundation accepts LOIs on a rolling basis: there are no deadlines for LOIs. You may apply online using the Foundation’s automated application process. Click here to get started. Or you may apply using the Foundation’s downloadable version of the LOI template and mailing it to the Foundation. Step 4: Review

If your request for funding meets the Foundation’s basic guidelines, your Letter of Intent will be assigned to a Program Officer and you will be notified promptly. Your LOI will be reviewed over an approximate two-month period. During this time, program staff may contact you by phone or site visit, or request you to send additional material.

Step 5: Submit an Application

The next step in the process is to submit a full application. Your Program Officer will contact you by phone and The Foundation will mail you a full application package. At this time, the Program Officer will work with you to develop your full proposal and to conduct the necessary due diligence, site visits, meetings, and assessment necessary to make funding recommendations to our Board of Trustees.

Step 6: Decision
The Skillman Foundation Board of Trustees meets four times a year to approve funding recommendations. The Board of Trustees meets in March, June, September and November.
