Help for homeowners

Foreclosure prevention grants approved

The Skillman Foundation’s Board of Trustees approved two important grants at a Feb. 12 special Board meeting. Both grants were made in an attempt to strengthen foreclosure prevention through coordinated community education and outreach to homeowners in the Foundation’s six targeted neighborhoods.

Grants were made to:

• Community Development Advocates of Detroit, $210,000 for one year, to reinforce homeownership by facilitating effective outreach to residents about foreclosure prevention counseling and resources.

• Southwest Housing Solutions Corporation, $250,000 for one year, to expand its foreclosure counseling model and bring it to scale by implementing a common platform of competent counseling techniques, and allow residents easier access to services.

“The Skillman Foundation, and other funders in Detroit, are committed to addressing the foreclosure crisis in Detroit,” said Tonya Allen, vice president of program. “These grants are an example of how we are tying hard to be more nimble and responsive to the needs of families with children.”
