Neighborhood Impact Statements

Written by Neighborhood Governance Organizations

The Good Neighborhoods Initiative was structured around residents leading change in the their neighborhoods. To support resident-led change, the Foundation helped bring community members together so they could organize, and provided leadership training, technical assistance and funding. In some communities, this organizing took place within governance councils. The following documents are a look at what four Detroit neighborhood governance councils were able to accomplish during the 10 year Good Neighborhoods Initiative, as well as their goals for the future.

The Skillman Foundation

The Skillman Foundation is a grantmaking organization established in 1960 by Rose Skillman. We have granted out more than $730 million and have served as a vocal advocate to strengthen K-12 education, afterschool programming, child-centered neighborhoods, youth and community leadership, and racial equity and justice.

We are in the process of developing a new strategic framework, co-designed with Detroit youth and their champions.
