100 Civic Leaders Gather for Detroit Out-of-School Time Leadership Forum

On Friday, March 9, the Skillman Foundation, Detroit Youth Development Resource Center, and American Youth Policy Forum hosted an Out-of-School Time Leadership Forum in Detroit. More than 100 participants representing afterschool providers, educational leaders, and philanthropy, engaged in conversation centered around the creation of a coordinated system of afterschool and summer learning opportunities that would allow for all Detroit youth to participate in high-quality youth development experiences.

Leaders from Boston (Boston Afterschool and Beyond), Chicago (Afterschool Matters), and Washington DC (Forum for Youth Investment), participated in a panel discussion in the morning, sharing lessons learned from efforts in their respective cities.

The event resulted in the creation of a table of community stakeholders who, over the next six months, will engage various youth development systems from across the country with the charge of providing a set of recommendations for a coordinated system of afterschool and summer learning opportunities that would effectively improve outcomes for Detroit children.

The Skillman Foundation

The Skillman Foundation is a grantmaking organization established in 1960 by Rose Skillman. We have granted out more than $730 million and have served as a vocal advocate to strengthen K-12 education, afterschool programming, child-centered neighborhoods, youth and community leadership, and racial equity and justice.

We are in the process of developing a new strategic framework, co-designed with Detroit youth and their champions.
