Skillman Scholar Alums Hit MOT Stage.

Two former Skillman Scholars – Alaina Brown, left, and Bernard D. Holcomb, right – have landed spots in the Michigan Opera Theatre’s Gershwin classic “Porgy & Bess.” Alaina, a soprano, plays Strawberry Woman, while Bernard, tenor, plays Crab Man. Both performers are graduates of Interlochen Center for the Arts and the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. The Skillman Scholar Program provides grants to five select secondary schools for full scholarships at Cranbrook Educational Community, Detroit Country Day School, Interlochen Center for the Arts, The Roeper School, and University Liggett School. Scholarship opportunities are targeted toward academically gifted, minority high school students from the tri-county area. Scholarship candidates should apply directly to the school of choice.
