Progress Report Issued on Recreation Improvements

A report, “More than a Game, the Skillman Foundation’s 10-year Track Record Re-Creating Recreation in Detroit,” was presented to providers of youth sports and recreational activities recently.

The report updates a variety of programs, from renovating spaces for youth sports and recreational activities to providing coaches for training to coordinating information on the range of activities available. The work of the Youth Sports and Recreation Initiative has resulted in 33 parks and four recreation centers being refurbished, and more than $25 million invested.

The creation of the Youth Sports and Recreation Commission has resulted in better coordination and awareness of after-school programs for children that need them. The Commission works with about 500 organizations offering a broad range of after-school programs. It has also helped providers find more funding by conducting grant writing workshops and funders forums.

“We’re definitely on the right track,” said Randy McNeil, executive director of the Youth Sports and Recreation Commission. “We’ve made significant steps to improving access and diversifying after-school programs for children.”
