Marygrove College recognizes Skillman's Sharnita C. Johnson
DETROIT – Skillman Foundation Program Officer Sharnita C. Johnson has been awarded the 2008 Marygrove College Distinguished Alumni and Distinguished Alumni of Tomorrow Award. Johnson will have the honor of accepting this award at a ceremony to be held on Sept. 19 at the Denk Chapman Hall on the Marygrove campus.
The Marygrove Alumni Association has established this award to yearly recognize and honor six alumni who have made significant contributions and demonstrated leadership in areas such as professional, educational or artistic endeavors, the community through government service and/or civic organizations, political action, social justice, volunteer activities in schools and hospitals or Marygrove College directly.
Marygrove cited Johnson's achievements through her hard-earned efforts and leadership as a program officer at the Foundation, where she oversees the Good Neighborhoods work in both the Osborn and Northend neighborhoods.
Created in 1960, The Skillman Foundation is a private philanthropy whose chief aim is to help develop good schools and good neighborhoods for children. Though grants are made throughout Southeast Michigan, most grants are directed at six Detroit neighborhoods – Southwest Detroit (Vernor and Chadsey/Condon), Brightmoor, Osborn, Central and Cody/Rouge – and toward innovative and successful schools throughout the city of Detroit.
