Young Men of Color Grants
The Foundation is lending a hand to those who are on the ground attempting to make a difference in their communities by offering up to $1,000 grants, which are to support activities designed for Detroit males from ages 11-18 who are African American or Latino.
Conference offers Latino participants wisdom, encouragement with eye on solutions
Award-winning author Jerry Tello shared stories of racism and ignorance with about 250 attendees at The Skillman Foundation’s recent Boys of Color: Perilous Times II conference. The event examined challenges facing Latino youth and their families, who form the largest non-black segment of Detroit’s ethnic population.
Perilous times: Symposium examines barriers facing Black boys
More than 400 people gathered at Marygrove College on Nov. 20 in support of Detroit’s African-American young men. The event was convened by several area foundations and universities, including The Skillman Foundation. Among the symposium participants, the message was clear: We must do things differently if we want to change the outcomes of African-American males.
